Purpose
To increase the capacity and living standards in Tra Vinh province, ensuring that benefits are equitably shared with poor households and villages.
Challenge
Although Vietnam has made economic strides, some regions of the country remain greatly below the poverty line. The challenge is to improve overall economic growth in Tra Vinh, with positive benefits accruing to the Khmer minority and the landless poor.
Approach
Agriteam adopted a value chain approach based on USAID’s standardized value chain development methodology. Key subsectors were identified with the highest growth potential and subsector analyses were completed. Work is presently ongoing in the key industry subsectors to overcome barriers to industry development and achieve opportunities for growth.
Project Description
Agriteam provides technical assistance, along with its Canadian partners and Vietnamese firm, to support the Department of Planning and Investment (DPI), Tra Vinh province to implement the C$7.2 million Tra Vinh Improved Livelihoods project. The project works in four areas:
- Capacity development and technical training
- Income generation and rural economic development
- Agricultural extension and technology transfer
- Small-scale infrastructure
Agriteam’s support to DPI focuses on an overall approach to, and methodologies for, regional economic development, as well as technical expertise in key subsectors such as beef, pork and natural fibre-based products and the development of producer associations.
Results
- Completed a regional economic development study identifying key barriers to, and opportunities for, growth in the province
- Completed subsector identification to identify key industries for project support
- Completed value chain assessments in the beef, pork and national fibre products sectors
- Provision of environmental training for provincial staff
We are providing ongoing support to develop key subsectors.
