Sub-Saharan Africa Projects

 

Nigeria, Nigeria School of Health Technology and Primary Health Care development, CIDA: January 2006–January 2011

This is a capacity development project, with a critical role to play in assisting the Government of Nigeria (GON) to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, quality and accessibility of its PHC programs and services and to improve the health of Nigerians. The project aims to create sustainable, replicable models for improved PHC provision in Bauchi and Cross River States.

Ghana, Eastern Corridor Districts of the Northern Region, Community-Driven Initiatives for Food Security (CIFS): April 2004–October 2010

The Community-Driven Initiatives for Food Security (CIFS) project in Ghana is a CIDA-sponsored project facilitated by Agriteam and CARE Canada. It has two main components and is being implemented over a six-year period (2004–2010). Component I represents the activities and facilitation of the Canadian Coordinating Agency. Component II represents budgetary support to the Government of Ghana, to be made available to the districts for implementation of project-related food security initiatives. This supports the project goal: a sustainable increase in food security in northern Ghana. CIFS was designed to strengthen both communities and local governments at the district and sub-district levels, as well as other government and non-governmental resources that are relied upon for technical assistance related to community-driven development and food security. CIFS emphasizes community capacity building to identify, prioritize and plan for effective food security initiatives.

Lilongwe, Malawi, Canada–Malawi Government Assistance Project (GAP): January 2001–March 2009

GAP supports institutional development of Malawian public sector agencies by providing technical support and assistance to specific ministries in the key areas of education, health, water supply, and gender equality. Through a responsive funding mechanism, Agriteam supports Malawian government partners to identify their own critical capacity needs and design results-based initiatives to address those needs. Agriteam then facilitates access to Canadian and African technical assistance and capacity development providers to meet these needs. Additionally, the project supports public sector institutions to develop HIV/AIDS strategies and assists partners to mainstream gender equality into all initiatives. GAP is a flexible, demand-driven and participatory mechanism that provides strategic interventions that are in line with the priorities of departments, ministries. It focuses on results-oriented, high impact, low-cost initiatives that lead directly to improved human resource development management and more efficient, effective, equitable and transparent delivery of services. Examples of successful initiatives supported by GAP include a country financial accountability assessment with the Ministry of Finance, strategic planning with every ministry and key department; gender budgeting with the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Community Services, and leadership development with the Ministry of Human Resource Management and Development.

 

Ghana, Ghana Farmer Responsive Mechanism in Extension and Research (in association with CHF) 2002-2007: December 2002–December 2007

The goal of this project was to increase capacity for and improve access to and use of demand-driven agricultural information and technology in Ghana’s three northern regions.

 

Tanzania, Canada’s Assistance to the District Based Support to Primary Education Project (CIDA): January 2002–January 2007

This initiative assisted the Ministry of Education and Culture in Tanzania to integrate gender equality, HIV/AIDS considerations and environmental sustainability into the country’s primary education reform efforts. Agriteam provided long- and short-term Canadian advisors who facilitated capacity development within the ministry and assisted officials to integrate the cross-cutting issues within ministry policy, procedures and budgets as well as into management and teacher training, primary school curriculum and educational resources. The facilitators worked within a sector-wide approach (SWAp) in the education sector, strengthening the capacity of ministry officials to work in a multi-donor and multi-stakeholder environment.

 

South Africa, specifically Pretoria, and the three provinces of Free State, Gauteng and Mpumalanga, Canada-South Africa Teacher Development Project (CSATDP): January 1999–January 2006

This was a CIDA-funded, C$7.8 million bilateral project designed to support appropriate and effective teacher professional development in South Africa. The project provided in-service educator training (INSET) at all levels of the system through individual and organizational capacity development activities.

 

Multiple Countries, 4th Phase Project Document for Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Capacity Building Programme: January 2005–December 2005

Agriteam worked with key stakeholders including multiple donors, implementing organizations, and over 40 HIPCs to develop the 4th Phase Project Document for the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Capacity Building Programme (CBP) (CIDA). Agriteam staff worked to ensure that this final phase of the CBP was developed in a participatory and results-based manner focusing on the sustainability of key CBP elements for the final phase of the CBP.

 

Ethiopia, Safety Net Program Design Mission World Bank/CIDA: January 2004–December 2004

Agriteam provided professional and technical expertise on the integration of gender dimensions into the design and implementation of the three core components of the Social Safety Nets Program: labour-intensive public works, conditional transfers and unconditional transfers.

 
 

Ghana, Ghana Gender Review (CIDA): January 1998–December 1998

Conducted a comprehensive review of gender equity aspects of CIDA's Ghana Program and made recommendations to improve integration of gender equity throughout the program.
