This project involves assistance to various Chinese government and non-government organizations in target provinces and autonomous regions to build capacity to deliver better livestock health extension services to poor farmers and herders in western regions, helping to increase the productivity and income for poor livestock farmers. Agriteam is responsible for coordination of capacity building and skills training methodologies leading to livestock health extension services that are more effective in serving poor small farmers. Field-based, pilot initiatives will ensure appropriate macro-micro linkages to lead, ultimately, to a sustainable system for the effective delivery of livestock health extension services in western China and increased farm productivity and income for poor rural women and men in the western regions.

The project will improve rural livelihoods in Mongolia, evidenced by increased net income for rural households, improved social and living conditions and increased opportunities for rural women and poor. The project will improve the institutional capacity of MSUA and its associated research institutes and strengthen of the national extension service. A producer-driven research system will make applied research more relevant to rural development. The development of an extension-training department at MSUA and strengthening the research capabilities of MSUA staff at the university and its branches this project will facilitate training of agrologists for effective transfer of information throughout the Mongolian agricultural community. New and sustainable crop and livestock production methods will improve productivity and in turn, profitability in the rural economy, which will help to diminish poverty and food security issues in Mongolia.

In the early implementation stage, this project will assess the progress of a World Bank-funded project supporting sustainable resource management initiatives in the globally significant areas of the Tian Shan and Altai Shan of Xinjiang and the Qilian Shan in Gansu.

This project is designed to improve the agricultural market information system and capacity to provide useful market intelligence to farmers and agribusiness. Improvements in the collection, analysis and dissemination of agricultural market information will be linked to initiatives around grading and the production of higher valued crops. These initiatives will work with existing commodity organizations, where possible, in the development of grading systems and with farm organizations at the community level. Key project activities include: improvement, upgrading and expansion of existing agriculture market information systems including hardware and software infrastructure, data collection and data processing; upgrading national government capacity in market analysis and provision of market intelligence; upgrading both government, non-government and private extension providers' capacity to produce and disseminate agriculture market information to producers and marketers; and increased farmer understanding of agriculture market information and application to farm activities through development of community farm organizations and lead farmers using Farmer Field School methodologies.

This project promoted environmentally sustainable development in China by enhancing its capacity to manage its environment through increasing the capacity of Chinese government institutions and agencies for protected area management, biodiversity protection and promotion of sustainable community development, especially among ethnic minorities. The key outputs of the project included: (1) improved management capacity for biodiversity protection and community development; (2) strengthened communications systems and information sharing; (3) models of community economic development established and promoted; (4) models of sustainable ecotourism established and promoted; and (5) improved capacity for environmental communication and education.

Agriteam Canada implemented this under the World Bank Rural Finance Project between 2004–2005. The project resulted in establishing the elements required to enable the Government of Romania to establish an indemnity fund to support the functioning of the warehouse receipt system for the country. The four components of the project were: (1) designing an indemnity fund for WHR including training programs for administering the indemnity fund; (2) preparing an awareness campaign for borrowers and producers about the warehouse receipt system; (3) preparing practices and procedures for lenders to accept warehouse receipts and for making claims on the indemnity fund; and (4) designing a warehouse receipt monitoring system. The project called upon a team of international advisors from Romania, the EU and North America. In addition to the above deliverables, project experts also prepared an issues paper and presentation for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Rural Development.

This project improved the profitability of the poultry industry and its contribution to poverty reduction and food security in rural areas of Bangladesh by increasing the capacity of the poultry feed industry, laboratory testing, extension services and the management capacity of small, medium and large poultry producers. Poultry management and feed utilization was improved through the development of training materials and skills building for 580 formal and non-formal extension workers and 7250 farmers. Feedmills received design assistance, consulting advice and training in facilities management, least-cost feed formation and poultry nutrition. The National Animal Nutrition Lab was upgraded to international standards and successfully assures its standards through participation in an international round-robin testing system. Project personnel worked with the government to draft a national Animal Feed Act which has been signed off by government and submitted to the law ministry.
