Gender Equality

Gender equality is a core cross-cutting issue and programming theme for many of Agriteam’s development projects. We have developed project-specific gender equity strategies in all the sectors in which we work, and ensured integration of gender issues in project design through the inclusion of sex-disaggregated indicators into logical framework analyses (LFAs) and performance measurement frameworks (PMFs).

We provide technical assistance for gender mainstreaming and gender equality programming to governments—including ministries of planning, finance, health, agriculture, and education—other development projects, non-governmental organizations, and educational establishments. We also offer gender training assistance and programming advice to NGOs and other Canadian Executing Agencies.

Sectors in which we have undertaken gender training and gender mainstreaming consultancies include education, health, agriculture, environment, energy, mining, infrastructure development, and private sector development. We talk to business, science and technical professionals in language they understand, and deepen their awareness of how paying attention to gender equity considerations improves both development results and business bottom lines.

Between 1996 and 2002, we served as the implementation agency for the Women’s Support Project (Phase II) in Indonesia (WSPII). WSPII worked nationally with the State Ministry for Women’s Empowerment and central institutions such as the powerful National Development Planning Board, as well as the planning units of six line ministries, to advance a gender mainstreaming agenda within government. Sub-nationally, WSPII worked in South Sulawesi with the provincial machinery for women and three university Women’s Studies Centres. It also successfully fostered strategic linkages and dialogue between government agencies, NGOs and women’s organizations.

Agriteam’s gender mainstreaming approach and toolkit, the Gender Analysis Pathway, helps government counterparts mainstream gender issues in different sectors, line ministries and policy initiatives. It has been used successfully by the governments of Indonesia and Fiji, among others. Our interactive e-learning training resource—Basic Concepts for Gender Mainstreaming—was housed on the website of the State Ministry for Women’s Empowerment in Indonesia for years after the completion of the WSPII project.

We also have experience working on women’s human rights issues including research and strategy development to combat violence against women (Indonesia) and trafficking in women and children (South Asia), and improving protection and services for migrant women workers in the garment sector (Bangladesh).
