Region: North and Central Asia
Partners and Counterparts:
In China: Ministry of Agriculture, Beijing; Provincial Animal Husbandry Bureaus

Purpose

The project contributed to rural economic development and poverty alleviation by significantly increasing the efficiency of pork production in China through the establishment of a modern, commercially viable and integrated lean pork industry.

Challenge

To increase the livelihoods of small farmers by introducing a modern and efficient lean swine production system, it was necessary to establish an integrated package of genetics, nutrition, production, health, marketing and business technologies to an industry characterized by smallholder producers with limited education. Special extension and technical support systems were used to develop the knowledge and skills in the local communities to successfully use and maintain these systems.

Project Description

The project increased the efficiency of pork production in China by establishing, in three Chinese provinces, a modern, commercially viable and integrated lean pork industry.
