Peru, Improving Basic Education in Piura (IBEP): March 2001–March 2012

Sector: Education and Education Reform
Region: Americas and the Caribbean

The Improving Basic Education Project (IBEP, PROMEB in Spanish) will strengthen basic education in Peru by developing the capacity of educational administrators and service providers in the region of Piura. The project will focus on four key components: (1) strengthen the institutional capacity and human resources of basic education; (2) develop and facilitate the implementation of educational programs; (3) coordinate project activities in rural environments; and (4) mainstream gender and participation into the project. It aims to improve access and quality of preschool and primary education for rural children, and to produce a model for basic education in Piura that can be reproduced in other parts of the country. The project will work with the Dirección Regional de Educación (DRE), the regional arm of the Ministry of Education (MED), and the Agentes de Desarrollo Educativo and Coordinaciones Educativas, intermediary organizations (OIs) that work in support of the DRE.

Pakistan, Canada-Pakistan HIV/AIDS Surveillance Project (HASP): October 2003–October 2011

Sector: Health and Population
Region: South Asia

Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd. is the lead firm in a consortium that also includes the University of Manitoba and ProAction: Partners for Community Health in implementing the Canada-Pakistan HIV/AIDS Surveillance Project (HASP), funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. The project seeks to enhance the capacity of the Government of Pakistan to implement an effective Second Generation Surveillance (SGS) System for HIV/AIDS. HASP is a capacity building project that involves working with the National AIDS Control Program (NACP), Provincial AIDS Control Programs (PACPs) and other stakeholders to develop a sustainable SGS system for HIV/AIDS. To date, HASP has succeeded in putting in place an effective SGS system that identifies population sub-groups at increased risk for HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections; provides timely warning of sudden changes in levels or distribution of HIV or of risk behaviours in those population sub-groups; and enables planners to understand the potential routes through which HIV can spread from high risk groups to the general population. Recently our consortium received an 18 month time extension on the project. The project will conclude in October 2011.

Egypt, Support to Egyptian Primary Schooling Project (STEPS II): January 2003–March 2011

Sector: Education and Education Reform
Region: North Africa and the Middle East

The vision of STEPS II has been articulated very clearly by the Egyptian Ministry of Education (MOE). STEPS II will support the MOE in achieving comprehensive quality education in Egypt. STEPS II will support the efforts of the MOE by promoting school-based improvement through all its activities. It will use the school as the unit of change. The success of STEPS II will ultimately be measured on the basis of how it has contributed to the MOE's vision of improved schools as expressed in the national standards. The overall approach of STEPS II is comprehensive and systemic, linking interventions at the school to all levels of the education system. Local and national level primary education personnel are identifying mechanisms for mobilizing school leaders and communities around education reform. The anticipated result of STEPS II is an enhanced basic education system at the school, idara, moderaya and national levels that actively supports the implementation of the national standards.

Ghana, Eastern Corridor Districts of the Northern Region, Community-Driven Initiatives for Food Security (CIFS): April 2004–October 2010

Sector: Governance and Public Sector Reform
Region: Sub-Saharan Africa

The Community-Driven Initiatives for Food Security (CIFS) project in Ghana is a CIDA-sponsored project facilitated by Agriteam and CARE Canada. It has two main components and is being implemented over a six-year period (2004–2010). Component I represents the activities and facilitation of the Canadian Coordinating Agency. Component II represents budgetary support to the Government of Ghana, to be made available to the districts for implementation of project-related food security initiatives. This supports the project goal: a sustainable increase in food security in northern Ghana. CIFS was designed to strengthen both communities and local governments at the district and sub-district levels, as well as other government and non-governmental resources that are relied upon for technical assistance related to community-driven development and food security. CIFS emphasizes community capacity building to identify, prioritize and plan for effective food security initiatives.
